wisconsin: make your voice heard

government affairs update

wisconsin lake life is changing – and right now, there’s an opportunity to help shape what comes next.

a new piece of legislation, lrb 3518/1, has been introduced to create a clear, statewide standard for towed water sports like wakesurfing and wakeboarding. the bill proposes a 200-foot setback from shorelines, docks, piers, boathouses and other on-water structures, while still allowing local governments flexibility to adopt less restrictive rules through exemptions.

why does this matter?

because for years, lake communities across wisconsin have been dealing with inconsistent rules, confusion, and growing tension around shared water use. this legislation helps cut through that – bringing clarity, consistency, and a path forward that supports both lake access and responsible boating.

it’s backed by the recreational boating industry for a reason. a 200-foot setback is supported by research as a distance that helps protect shorelines while still allowing people to enjoy the sports that bring life to our lakes. more importantly, it creates a standard everyone can understand and build around.

this is the kind of progress that keeps lake culture moving forward.

huge thanks to the water sports industry association for leading the charge and continuing to fight for the future of lake access.

Dear Representative/Senator [INSERT NAME],

I want to express my strong support of recently introduced legislation (LRB 3518/1) that would set a statewide standard for those engaged in wakesurfing or wakeboarding by establishing a setback on waterways at no more than 200 feet from a shoreline, dock, pier, boathouse or other structures either completely or partially on the water. I support a 200-foot setback due to peer-reviewed research that found this distance to be an optimal offset to not degrade shorelines and to help clarify ongoing issues in local communities by setting a statewide standard.

Ultimately, this legislation is a win-win for boaters, residents, the tourism industry, and those who enjoy our lakes. Wisconsin lakes over the past few years have seen increased growth in the popularity of recreational boating, which has created new challenges. Supporting this legislation will address these issues and is critical in moving Wisconsin forward. I ask that you consider supporting this legislation if it comes before a committee you serve on and/or the entire legislature.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

[INSERT NAME]
