what is the wings for life world run? (and why we’re all in)
there are a lot of races out there. most of them follow the same format: pick a distance, line up and run to a finish line.
the wings for life world run is different.
this isn’t about chasing a time or checking off miles. it’s a global event built around a single purpose: funding research to find a cure for spinal cord injury. every entry fee goes directly toward that mission, which makes it one of the few events where participation alone creates real impact.
what is the wings for life world run?
wings for life is a worldwide running event that takes place at the exact same time across the globe. instead of thousands of separate races, it’s one unified experience, with participants running in cities, towns and neighborhoods everywhere.
what makes it stand out is simple: there is no set distance and no traditional finish line. instead, your race ends when you’re caught.
how does the run actually work?
thirty minutes after the race begins, a virtual “catcher car” starts moving along the "course." it gradually increases its speed, chasing participants wherever they are in the world.
once the catcher car passes you, your race is over. that moment becomes your finish line.
this format completely changes how people approach the run. you’re not locked into a distance, and you don’t have to worry about keeping up with anyone else. you simply move at your own pace and see how far you can go before the catcher car reaches you.
why it’s different from any other race
most races are built around performance. wings for life is built around participation. because there’s no fixed distance:
- first-time runners can show up without pressure
- experienced runners still have something to push toward
- everyone starts together, no matter where they are in the world
it creates a level playing field where the only goal is to keep moving for as long as you can.
more importantly, it connects people globally. you’re running at the same time as thousands of others, all contributing to the same cause, which gives the event a different kind of energy than a typical race.
when does it happen?
the wings for life world run takes place once a year (may 10), with a synchronized global start time (7AM EDT/6AM CDT). you can either:
- join an organized run in a host city
- or participate virtually using the wings for life app
the virtual option makes it accessible no matter where you are, whether that’s a major city, a small town or somewhere near your home lake.

why lake lovers club is getting involved
we spend a lot of time on the water -- boating, skiing, surfing or just slowing things down and enjoying the lake. but being around the water also means understanding how quickly things can change. injuries happen and when they do, they can completely alter someone’s life in an instant.
supporting wings for life is a way for us to give back to a cause that directly impacts people we personally know and are in and around the communities we’re part of. it’s also an opportunity to bring our lake communities together for something bigger than a typical day out on the water.
join the lake lovers club team
we’re building a team for this year’s run with a goal of raising $10,000.
you don’t need to be a runner to join -- you can walk, jog or run. the goal isn’t how fast you go. it’s that you show up and take part.
after you register and download the app, you’ll have the option to join a team. just search for lake lovers club and join us. : )
what to expect on race day
on race day, everything runs through the app.
you’ll start at the same time as participants around the world. from there, you simply move at your own pace while the app tracks your progress and the position of the catcher car.
as it gets closer, you’ll hear updates, which adds a unique kind of motivation to keep going just a little longer.
when it passes you, your race is complete. no finish chute, no medals at the line -- just the distance you covered and the knowledge that you contributed to something meaningful.
why this run matters
this isn’t about competition or hitting a certain number of miles. it’s about showing up for a cause that needs support and doing it alongside a global community.
every step contributes to research aimed at improving and restoring spinal cord function. that’s what makes this run different from almost anything else out there.
